Low emissions on Amsterdam's canals: Saloon boat 'Henry Schmitz' now underway with Torqeedo electric propulsion.
- Torqeedo equips the saloon boat 'Henry Schmitz' in Amsterdam with a fully electric Deep Blue propulsion system.
- The 16-metre-long vessel is powered by a powerful Deep Blue 50i motor and a Deep Blue Battery 40.
- From 1st March 2025, the boat will offer dinner cruises for up to 20 people on Amsterdam's historic canals.
- New legislation for Amsterdam's inner-city waterways from the 1st of April 2025 makes it necessary to convert to alternative propulsion solutions.
Amsterdam, Netherlands (7th April 2025) – The historic saloon boat 'Henry Schmitz' is a floating restaurant on the canals of Amsterdam. Last year the boat, built in 1900, was converted to a fully electric propulsion system from Torqeedo, the market leader for electric propulsion mobility on the water. In cooperation with the Dutch shipyard Kenco, Torqeedo equipped the almost 16 metre long vessel (of the Amsterdam-based shipping company Jewel Cruises) with a powerful Deep Blue 50i motor and a Deep Blue Battery 40. With a capacity of around 40 kWh, the battery powers the low-noise propulsion system and also supplies the boats's extensive galley. Since March 1st 2025, it has been offering low-emission dinner cruises for up to 20 people through Amsterdam.
“In growing metropolises, the switch to electric propulsion is a win-win situation for everyone involved. With the Henry Schmitz, we have created an exclusive experience for visitors to the canals of Amsterdam with our propulsion system”, says Matthias Vogel, SVP Global Market, Customer & Service from Torqeedo.
New legislation for Amsterdam`s inner-city waterways
From April 1st 2025, the city of Amsterdam will create a zero-emission zone around the city centre. Under the new regulations, only electric or hydrogen-powered pleasure boats will be allowed to navigate Amsterdam's historic waterways.
The aim of the new legislation is to reduce noise and CO₂ emissions in the city, thereby improving the quality of air and life in Amsterdam. In order to provide sufficient electricity for the growing number of electric boats, a total of 2,500 charging points for electric boats will be installed by 2030.
“Thanks to our extensive product portfolio and 20 years of experience, we are able to implement tailor-made solutions for vessels of all sizes and equip them with holistic energy management systems. The historic Henry Schmitz will continue to offer visitors a unique experience on Amsterdam's canals”, concludes Matthias Vogel, SVP Global Market, Customer & Service of Torqeedo.
